Sinopsis

This film is about a young Malay man, Osman or Seman, who is writing his autobiography by using the old style Malay style of story-telling and language as found only in ancient text or "hikayat". Osman or Seman has attained personal success as an advertising executive, and has no other career goals to aspire to. So, in trying to find some diversion or meaning in his life he decides to recollect his past experience and the history of his family, which lead back to interesting episodes which happened during the Japanese Occupation when his grandfather was wealthy, but who had been cheated to sell off his property and got "Japanese banana currency" notes that became useless soon after the war. Also, he decries the fact that due to the different opportunities afforded them, he and his elder brother, were not on good terms, and he wants to patch things up now that they have grown older. And he recalls his younger brother, Wahab, who was too naive about life, and who died when he was dragged under a bus. He also wants to make peace with his adopted Chinese brother, an army lance corporal, who feels that he is being ignored by him and the family now that he is married and has a son. This film is told in a series of vignettes showing the past, present and future (imaginary) episodes in the life of Seman, which highlight the plight of his family.
